Colocation Giants Unveiled: Who’s Powering the Global Data Center Backbone

This map shows several major companies that own colocation data centers. For each company, we see the distribution of how many networks each data center location hosts.

It's clear that Equinix and Digital Realty stand out as major interconnection hubs. Their large data centers host hundreds of networks, making them critical to the global internet's infrastructure. These companies prioritize providing a platform for businesses to connect with each other, cloud providers, and other key partners.

The other companies, while still important players in the colocation market, have different focuses. Companies like Iron Mountain and Cyxtera emphasize data security and resilience, catering to clients with high compliance needs. Cologix focuses on edge computing and North American connectivity, while Data4 has a strong European presence and emphasizes sustainability. QTS and CyrusOne cater to a mix of enterprise and hyperscale clients, with strengths in government services and high-performance computing, respectively. While interconnection is still a factor for these companies, their primary services revolve around providing space, power, cooling, and other infrastructure needs, with varying specializations based on their strengths and target markets.
